NEW DELHI: Government efforts for a uniform sports scheme and policy across the country by moving ‘Sports’ from the State list to the Concurrent list are yet to make the desired progress. While national sports federations gave their nod in October last year to the sports ministry regarding this, the state governments are yet to respond.
A senior official of the sports ministry said, the initiative will allow both the Central and state governments to work together for the betterment of sports.
“There will be uniformity in the policies and any scheme could be implemented smoothly with the coordination of both the Centre and states. The states should understand that the Centre is not taking over their rights or autonomy,” said the official.
Officials said that the sports ministry has been trying for this since long and an effort had failed in 2009 when a Bill was withdrawn due to lack of consensus among the states. A resolution was also passed by the national sports federations.
