CHANDIGARH: Coming true on his poll promise of distributing smartphones to the youth of the state, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh will launch the scheme—Captain Smart Connect—on Diwali which falls on October 19.
In the first lot, the state government will distribute around three lakh smartphones between October this year and March next year. Each month around 50,000 phones will be distributed.
Youth aged between 18 and 35 years will be eligible for the scheme which will be launched from the CM’s home town, Patiala. A total of 30 lakh youth have registered.
Not only smartphones, but the youth would also get voice call facility and 4G data free for a year. The government is already in talks with Airtel, Vodaphone, Idea, and Reliance Jio, confirmed a senior state government official.
But, the state government has this year earmarked only `10 crore for the scheme. This is not enough. Even if the government decides to distribute the newly launched `1,500 Reliance Jio phone, in one month alone it would end up paying `7.5 core to the company for 50,000 handsets.
An official added that the companies might also give free smartphones.
