CHENNAI: On Thursday, the awards selection committee headed by Justice (Retd) CK Thakkar announced the list of athletes for the Arjuna Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Reactions from a few athletes or their near ones...
SSP Chawrasia: It was my dream to get the Arjuna Award. It’s a recognition for all that I have done. I want to bring more titles and also teach youngsters in the coming years.
Harmander Singh, Harmanpreet Kaur’s dad: It’s a good time for our family. The entire family is very happy and surprised that Harmanpreet is nominated. I want to thank the Central government and BCCI for the help.
Oinam Bembem Devi: It’s a great honour to become only the second India woman footballer to win an Arjuna. This is my fourth attempt and I’ve spent 21 year playing for the country. So it is finally great to be recognised for that. This is great for the women’s game as well. Girls will look at this and think ‘you can do this by playing football’. The current crop of girls can do better than me and I will continue to assist them.
T Kumar, Mariyappan Thangavelu’s younger brother: We were the ones who actually told him. When we told him he immediately became very happy with the honour bestowed upon him by the government. He remains focused on winning more global events.
Vennam Surendra, father of Jyothi Surekha: It is a proud moment for me as my daughter has been recommended for the prestigious Arjuna Award by SAAP and the government of Andhra Pradesh. I’m grateful to Koneru Lakshmaiah University and others who supported my daughter and helped her realise her dreams. This is the result of years of hard work.
Arokia Rajiv: “I just heard it sometime back and what can I say... one of the happiest days of my life,” he said from London, where he is training ahead of the World Athletics Championships. “I did expect the award and want to bring more laurels to the State and country.”
