On a romantic trail

Anushka Sharma debuted opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Raj Films Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi 10 years ago. He was 43 then, and she was just 20. Four years later, they returned with each other in Jab Tak Hain Jaan. Now they’re back to romancing each other in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab Harry Met Sejal, and will be seen in Anand L Rai’s next film, in which Shah Rukh will play a dwarf.
Shah Rukh has been experimenting with films such as Dilwale, Fan and Raees, while Anushka has been producing and acting in experimental movies—NH10, Phillauri and Pari.
“When Harry Met Sejal is a love story. It’s naughty, it’s a film for a family, not a message story or issue-based film like Chak De or Dangal,” says Shah Rukh.
Anushka always wanted to work with Imtiaz after she saw his Jab We Met. She says, “He has a thing for love stories, understanding of romance and the man-woman relationship, which you don’t see in many films.”
When it’s a Shah Rukh film, it has to be a romantic venture. “Yashji used to tell me that I should do more love stories. But I didn’t like love stories then. I had not done Jab We Met then, but I’d done Dilwale, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Chalte Chalte. Love stories usually become hits like Roman Holiday and Casablanca, which you remember forever. People have given me a romantic hero tag. My Name Is Khan was different, so was Swades. I’m doing a pure romantic film after a long time,” says Shah Rukh.
Having completed 25 years in the industry, the 52-year-old actor says the credit for the turning points in life goes to his directors. “I don’t want to romanticise things. I once told Mani Ratnam saab that I can give my right hand. He didn’t take it, but I’m still here. Yash Raj, Karan Johar, Aziz, Farhan and many others have been turning points of my life. I tell many actresses not to work with directors they’re not happy with.”
King Khan adds that losing adulation and stardom has never played on his mind. “I worry that I’ll have more stardom and adulation. I don’t like bodyguards, I get hidden behind them. Stardom can’t be made, nor spoilt, nor can it last forever. You have to keep working hard for it all your life.”
Anushka chips in. “You always see growth in yourself as an actor, as a human being, which is equally important.
I’m more confident today and feel the choices I’ve made were brave because of inner strength I was building up for many years. I didn’t plan on becoming an actor since I was not from the film industry. I value this journey as it has made me the person I am today.”
Shah Rukh is doing Rai’s movie with Anushka and Katrina Kaif. Anushka is still working on her next film, Pari. She is also doing Sui Dhaga with Varun Dhawan.
